About the Royal Orders of Knighthood
About us
The Royal Orders of Knighthood is the name of the organisation that manages the Royal Orders and comprises the Grand Master, the Chapter and the Chancery. The Council of the Orders is also found at the Royal Orders of Knighthood. Read more about the different parts of the Royal Orders of Knighthood below.
The Chapter
The Chapter of the Royal Orders of Knighthood is the highest governing body of the Swedish Royal Orders, and convenes once a year. The Chapter of the Orders consists of The King, the Chancellor, the Vice Chancellor and four members appointed by The King.
The Chancery
The Chancery of the Royal Orders of Knighthood is located at the Royal Palace in Stockholm, adjacent to the Halls of the Orders. The Chancery processes matters pertaining to the conferral of the Swedish Royal Orders of Knighthood and the Royal Medals.
The Council
For the processing of nominations, there is also an independent Council at the Royal Orders of Knighthood. The Council is to express an opinion to the government with proposals for conferring Royal Orders for commendable actions.
Other duties and responsibilites
In the Halls of the Orders at the Royal Palace, there is a permanent exhibition of Sweden’s Royal Orders of Knighthood, for which the Royal Orders of Knighthood is responsible. Here, interesting insights into the orders – past and present – are provided.
In addition to the above-mentioned duties, the Royal Orders of Knighthood is also responsible for the painting of seraphim shields, and the solemn transfer of the seraphim shields to Riddarholmen Church upon the funeral of seraphim knights and seraphim members.
The Royal Orders of Knighthood keeps a register of all classes of orders conferred upon Swedish and foreign citizens. The registers are available digitally, through the National Archives.

The Chancery of the Royal Orders also processes, on behalf of the Office of the Marshal of the Realm, submitted nominations for Royal Medals for the final decision of H.M. The King.
